John Wootters Markham II was born in Crockett, Texas on April 5, 1916. He passed away peacefully at his home in Trinity, Texas on February 26, 2013 with loved ones by him.
His father, John W. Markham, and mother, Nan E. Smith Markham, were from Houston County, TX. John was the oldest of four children and at a young age became the man of the house. Little did he know then that role would make him the wonderful man his friends and family will all miss. He was a man of his word. He cared for his family with an unconditional love. He also shared that love with his beloved, wife, Anna Fae Knox, also of Crockett, Texas.
John and Anna were married for 66 years. They were both life long members of the First United Methodist Church. During World War II, John worked as an accountant for Whitaker Pipe Lines, building fuel supply lines for the war effort, from Oklahoma to New Jersey. After the war, they returned to Texas and settled in Deer Park, where he worked and retired from Shell Chemical Company. John and Anna had three sons. In 1980, John and Anna retired and moved home to Trinity, Texas. During his retirement he enjoyed hunting and fishing with his children and grandchildren. He was an excellent role model and was very proud of his entire family.
John is preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, Faye and Lucy, and the love of his life Anna Fae.
John is survived by his sons John W. Markham III and his wife, Judy, of Ore City, TX, Geoffrey K. Markham and his wife, Pamela, of Huntsville, TX, and Randall S. Markham and his wife, Nancy, of Deer Park, TX. He is also survived by his brother Tom S. Markham and his wife, Sue, of Leona, TX and his grandchildren, Jodi Miller and husband, Marc, of San Antonio, TX, John Markham IV of Dallas, TX, Jana Minor and husband, Don, of Ore City, TX, Kevin Markham and wife, Cindy, of Huntsville, TX, Brandi O'Quinn and husband, Rodney, of LaPorte, TX and David Markham and wife, Kathy, of Huntsville, TX. He was proud of his fourteen great-grandchildren: Alex Miller, Kendall Miller, Elizabeth Price, Kaitlin Camp, Samantha Rogers, Brady O'Quinn, Bryce O'Quinn, Mason Markham, Hunter Markham, Riley Markham, Coyann Markham, Austin Minor, Baylee Markham and Corrie Markham.
In almost 97 years of life, John saw many changes in America and the world. Some of these changes he approved of, others he did not always understand. He was a great example to all. He worked hard; he was fair and ethical, and he had many friends and few foes. His faith in God was strong. He was a true gentleman.
