Margaret Elaine Maris was born October 14, 1915, in Coldwater, Kansas to Maude Mabel (Marley) Maris and Walter T. Maris; grandparents were William and Isabell Marley and John and Elma Maris.

Elaine attended Coldwater grade and high schools where she was active in the music department and a member of the girls' quartet. She was part of the intermission entertainment, as a Charleston dancer, at the Chief Theatre during her senior year. After graduation in 1933, she attended and received a teaching certificate from Emporia State Teachers' College. Most of her 11 years of teaching was spent in the one-room schoolhouses of Nauvoo, Avila, Glendale and Pike, although she was a first grade teacher for one year in the Coldwater Grade School – she loved the enthusiasm of first graders!

On July 21, 1936, Elaine wed Earl Vaughn Coles at her parents' home. In 1949, they bought the Buttermilk Store and Gas Service south of Coldwater on the Coy route. After Vaughn's death on November 8, 1973, she continued to manage the store and gas business with the help of Roy Hoffman, Rob Basnett, and Larry Oller. On June 1, 1974, she had an auction and moved into Coldwater.

At the time of her move, Elaine was working as a Certified Nurse Aide for the Pioneer Lodge nursing facility when a friend encouraged her to run for the office of Register of Deeds as a write-in candidate. She won! She retired from the office in 1986.

In July, 2001, she moved to Topeka, Kansas to be near her daughter and grandchildren. While living at Atria Hearthstone retirement community, she enjoyed many trips, including ones to Branson, Missouri and Las Vegas, Nevada. She served on the food committee, helped the activities' department (including running their "store") and was one of the Atria Host Ambassadors. She moved to her daughter's home in 2005 after suffering several small strokes.

She was a member of Antioch United Methodist Church, transferred her membership to Coldwater United Methodist Church and attended Lowman United Methodist Church in Topeka from 2001 until her death. An active member of the Coldwater Eastern Star Chapter #224 for 50 years, Elaine held several chairs including Worthy Matron and District Aide. She was also active in a music club, Holmes Bible Study No. 1, Delta Kappa Gamma, her daughter's music performances, and her grandsons' high school wrestling.

She is survived by her daughter, Sharon Coles McGuire; two grandsons; ten nephews; three great grandchildren; and a host of friends who provided her with watchful attention, assistance, support and extra special care.

Preceding her in death were her parents, sister Martha Carstenson, brother Glenn Maris, husband Vaughn Coles and six girl friends.

Weep not, for the trials are over, but rejoice that her race is run and she has gone to the mansion God promised her.
