Vaclav Barta was born May 1, 1844, when Czechoslovakia was part of the Austrian Empire. He married Elizabeth Maresh about 1872, and by 1887 they had 6 children. Vaclav talked about America all the time. Kinfolk advised Vaclav to go to America and look over the country. If he liked it, he could let them know, and they would send the family to him.
He set sail for Virginia where he obtained a job in a coal mine. Doing part time work as a shoemaker (his trade in Austria) he was able to save money for his family's passage. Taking time away from his labors in Virginia, he traveled to Grafton, Dakota Territory, where he worked in the fields. It was during this time that he located a farm for himself in Fertile Township of Walsh County the SE 1/4 of Section 35. He notified his family of the good news and asked them to meet him in Virginia.
Elizabeth and their 6 children, George, 1874; Mary E, 1875; Anna B, 1879; Joseph George, 1881; John Joseph, 1885; and Frank Joseph, 1887, arrived in Virginia in 1888 and proceeded to the Dakota Territory. The very next year tragedy struck. While working in her garden, Elizabeth collapsed and died. In order to care for his children, Vaclav needed a new wife. He remembered a young woman, named Katherine Kohoutek. She had become an orphan at the age of 3 and had been adopted by a neighbor in Czechoslovakia.
The children knew this Katherine Kohoutek, and said they would like to have her for mother of the house. He wrote this woman and agreed to pay her way to America if she would marry him. She accepted and they were married at St Luke's Catholic Church in Veseleyville in 1889.
They lived happily together and produced 9 more children, Vaclav Vencil James "Wenceslaus", 1891; Elizabeth, 1894; Thomas Frank, 1896; Agnes Antonette, 1899; Margaret V, 1902; Rudolf "Ralfie", 1904 (died at age of 2); Ralph, abt 1907; Julia, abt 1913; and Cyril, 1915. They farmed in Fertile Twp. until 1898, when they moved to Prairie Centre Twp. to the land now owned by the Anton A Novak family. Vaclav died in 1919, at the age of 75, and Katherine in 1930, at the age of 61.
