U.S. ARMY VETERAN WORLD WAR II

Aldo Frank (Al) Marchetti, a lifetime Bakersfield resident and long time businessman, died quietly on the evening of the last day of 2011. Aldo, the youngest of four sons, was born of Italian immigrants Alfredo and Argentina Marchetti in Bakersfield on November 22, 1923. He was preceded in death by his parents and all of his older brothers: Reno, Alfredo and Guido. He was also preceded in death by his loving wife, Sue (Lorenzetti) Marchetti. Aldo is survived by his three daughters: Carol Ann Marchetti Jeter and her husband Ed; Janet Kay Reich and her husband, Paul and sons, Colby and Daniel; and Alisa Gale Coburn, her husband Mike and daughter Alexa. Dad grew up in Greenfield and worked on the family farm. He graduated from Bakersfield High School and attended Bakersfield College. He met the love of his life, Sue Lorenzetti at the Italian Catholic Federation. At the age of 19, he entered the U.S. Army and saw service in the Pacific during WWII. Stationed on the island of Guam for over a year, he achieved the rank of sergeant in the 305th Air Engineering Squadron of the 69th Air Service Group, 20th Air Force. It was here that Aldo learned the intricacies of aircraft mechanics while working on B-29's and acquired a love of flying that would follow him his whole life. Upon returning from service, Aldo married his sweetheart, Sue, on June 20, 1946. Dad began a partnership with two friends, and created a local business repairing electric motors and tools, known as Electropower. Aldo, being the surviving partner, eventually, took full ownership of the business and continued serving the Bakersfield community until his health forced the business closure in 2008. Dad could build or repair anything. In the fifties and sixties he built and raced outboard motor boats and competed at Hart Park and Lake Ming. Later he received his private pilots license and flew his own Cessna 172. He and Mom greatly enjoyed flights above the valley and foothills of Bakersfield. Eventually he traded the Cessna for a Lancair homebuilt aircraft kit and became a member of the Experimental Aircraft Association. An avid fisherman, Dad looked forward to the annual family vacation to June Lake. Dad was a long time member of the Bakersfield Elks Lodge where he had many friends. In his later years he enjoyed weekly gatherings with his friends at the Kern City Clubhouse and Sunday dinners with his family. He was a wonderful husband and father and a good example for his daughters of what kind of man to marry. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends. Graveside Services will be at 10:00 a.m. Thursday January 5th at Hillcrest Cemetery. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to: Cure PSP, 30 E.
