Betty Louise Russell, 81, of Pittsburg, Kansas, died at 4:35 p.m. Saturday, May 31, 2008 at Mt. Carmel Regional Medical Center, Pittsburg, Kansas.
She was born September 21, 1926 at Arcadia, Kansas to Charles Harding and Bessie (Terrell) Mapes.
She attended school at Leon, Kansas. She lived most of her early life in Girard, KS, before moving to Pittsburg in 1977.
On February 19, 1944, she married Clarence Clemens "Pete" Russell at Girard, Kansas. He preceded her in death on January 13, 1982.
She worked as a clerk at Ben Franklin in Girard, press operator/laundry attendant for Overstreets Laundromat in Girard, sales person for L.B. Price and cleaning lady for Bitner Realty. She retired in 1986.
She helped care for forty five foster children during her lifetime.
Membership was held in the Liberty Baptist Church in Pittsburg, KS.
She is survived by four sons, William Ray Russell and wife, Debbie of Bartlesville, OK, Clarence Dale Russell of Frontenac, KS, Randy Dean Russell and wife, Paula of Girard, KS, and Gayle Gene and wife, JoEllen Russell of Pittsburg, KS; four daughters, Donna Marie Russell of Frontenac, KS, Deanna Mae Russell and Gary Hald of Radley, KS, Sherrie Sue Shelley of Pittsburg, KS, and Joye Lou VanGorden and husband, John of Frontenac, KS; two foster daughters, Delena Archer of Austin, TX and Lucy Threlfall of Girard, KS; a foster son, Harry Willis and wife, Dena of Girard, KS; one brother, George Mapes; three sisters, Daisy Matson, Della Noe, and Vera Kaemmerling, all of Pittsburg, KS; twenty-nine grandchildren; 53 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; seven foster grandchildren and 9 foster great-grandchildren; Kylie and Keaton Wilber, children of Mike & Ellie Wilber, whom she thought of as grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by parents; her husband; three sisters, Mabel Redfern, Mildred Coe, and Gladys Stevens; a brother, Reuben Mapes, who was killed in action during WWII; two son-in-laws, David Lee Shelley and Donald Lee Hartman, Sr.
Graveside services will be June 4, 2008 at the Farlington Cemetery, Farlington, Kansas, with Pastor James Fryer officiating.
The family suggests memorials to Sunset Manor and/or the Cado Historical Society.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Brenner Mortuary, Pittsburg, KS.
