My Dear Parents
In 1849, Pernet decided to go to California to seek gold. He sailed from New York March 1,1849, He describes doubling around Cape Horn, and passing along the coast of Patigonia. In sight of the harbor of Valparaso in Chille, South America, he beheld some of the highest mountains in the world, the Andes with their snowy tops, but at a great distance. They stayed in Valparaso for 11 days, where they have one of the mildest climates in the world. They discharged cargo and took on more, as they headed for San Francisco. They arrived on Aug.6,1849.
