Olive was the daughter of William Manuwal and Clara Pearl Harris, who married in 1895. I found nine children for the couple—Olive Gertrude (2 Jul 1898), Flossie Fern (1899), Alva Bertis (1903), Edna Marie (1905), Bessie Artis (1907), Myrl George (1908), Lester Floyd (1910), Arnold Harris (1915) and Kenneth Lowell (1918).

Olive first appeared with her family on the 1900 Census, living in Plymouth's Center Township, Marshall Co., Indiana, where her father William Manuwal, aged 25, was farming for a living. Clara, aged 20, reported that she had had two children, both of them still living. There with their parents were daughters Ollie, aged 1, and Flossie, aged 8 months. Son Alva joined the family in 1903, followed by daughter Edna in 1905.

Soon after Edna's birth, the family pulled up stakes and moved to Kansas where daughter Bessie joined the family in 1907, followed by son Myrl in 1908. I found them on the 1910 Census, living in Haven, Reno Co., Kansas, where William, aged 35, was working a new farm. Clara, aged 30, reported that she had had six children, all of them still living. Indeed, keeping Clara busy at home were Olive, aged 12, Flossie, aged 10, Alva, aged 6, Edna, aged 5, Bessie, aged 3, and Myrl, aged 1. Son Lester joined the family later that same year.

Within a couple of years of Lester's birth, the family decided to move back to Indiana, where son Arnold made his appearance in 1915, followed by son Kenneth in 1918. The 1920 Census placed the family back in Plymouth's Center Township. William, aged 44, was busy farming. Clara, aged 40, was busy at home tending to the needs of their eight children—Olive (enumerated as Gutrude O.), aged 21 and working in a shirt factory, Alva, aged 16, Edna, aged 15, Bessie, aged 12, Myrl, aged 11, Lester, aged 8, Arnold, aged 5, and Kenneth, aged 1 year 3 months. Daughter Flossie Fern was no longer living with her family. A year earlier, she had married Glenn H. Chase on 19 Apr 1919.

A year after that census, Olive married John Aberman Kaufman on 21 Sep 1921 in Marshall County. John was the son of Fred and Eva Kaufman. A year after they married, Olive and John welcomed daughter Julia Marie on 9 Jul 1921. Olive and John welcomed four more children in the years that followed—Marietta (5 Sep 1923), William Fredrick (23 Aug 1925), Arthur Eugene (24 Jul 1926), and Lowell J. (12 Oct 1929).

I found their family on the 1930 Census, living at 900 W. La Porte St. in Plymouth. John Kaufman, aged 28, was employed as a track man for the railroad. Olive (Gertrude on the record), aged 31, would have had her hands full at home taking care of their five young children—Julia, aged 7, Marietta, aged 6, William, aged 4, Arthur, aged 3, and baby Lowell, aged 5 months.

They were still living in Plymouth when the 1940 Census came around, but had moved to a residence located at 728 Michigan Street. John, aged 38, was still working for the railroad but as a section man. Olive, aged 41, was keeping house. Still living at home with their parents were Marietta, aged 16, William, aged 14, Arthur, aged 13, and Lowell, aged 10.

Olive and John's daughter Julia had married first-husband Howard A. Scheetz on 16 Dec 1939 in Fulton Co., Indiana. They had three children together—John, Stephen Wayne and Nancy Jean. Tragically, during WWII, Julia received word from the War Department that John had perished during an enemy attack on 23 Feb 1945 while stationed on Iwo Jima. Julia eventually married for a second time, acquiring the surname Mitchell. After her death on 27 Oct 1976, Julia was laid to rest next to first-husband Howard.

Olive's husband John died on 4 Dec 1960 at age 60. Olive lived another five years, passing on 6 May 1965 at age 66. As for Olive's other four children, daughter Marietta married Allen Edward Eastlund on 9 May 1970 in Nappanee, Indiana. She died on 9 Jan 2005 of sepsis. Olive's son William married Rosamond Jones. He died on 13 Dec 2003. Olive's son Arthur "Art" was a piano man, his musical career spanning several decades. He died on 1 Mar 2006. Olive's youngest son Lowell married Patsy Lichenberger on 28 Aug 1954. He died of colon cancer on 20 Jun 2000.
