Emmett W. "Steve" MANCHESTER, 100, of the Towanda Personal Care Home and formerly of Potterville, died Wednesday evening, September 21, 2005, at Towanda Memorial Hospital. Emmett was born February 16, 1905 in the Town of Union, a son of the late Ernest D. and Flo Ella (Cook) Manchester. He was a 1924 graduate of Orwell High School. Most of his life was spent on the family farm at Cook's Pond near Potterville. Emmett was employed at IBM in Endicott and Owego, retiring in 1970 after 38 years of employment. He served as an aircraft mechanic in the US Army 1942-1944. On Nov.4, 1944, he married Helen Louise Bomboy in Endicott, N.Y. Their 54-year marriage ended with her death April 28, 1999. Emmett was a member of the Dille Parish United Church of Christ, IBM Quarter Century Club, a member and Past Master of the LeRay Lodge #471 Free and Accepted Masons and A.S.S.R. Valley of Towanda 32nd Degree. For many years he served as a director of the Darling Cemetery Association.
He was a past member of the Northeast Bradford Board of Education and served as President during the formation of Northeast Bradford School District; in addition he also was longtime superintendent of the Potterville Sunday School and was catcher for the Potterville Aces Baseball Team. He is survived by four children, J. Ellen Manchester, Kirk C. Manchester, Daniel S. Manchester, and Kathy M. Jones and her husband, Andrew; five grandchildren, James (Barbara), Elizabeth (Sean) Murray, Theresa Broughton, and Carlotta (Steve) Cooper; and five great-grandchildren. He is also survived by several nieces, nephews and cousins. Emmett was predeceased by a daughter-in-law, Vicki Manchester; and five brothers.
Funeral services and celebration of Steve's life will be held on Saturday, September 24th, at 2 p.m. at the Dille Parish United Church of Christ, Potterville, with his pastor, Rev. Sharon Temple, officiating. Masonic services will be conducted prior to the funeral service. Interment and prayers of committal will follow in the Darling Cemetery. A period of visitation and sharing memories will be held this evening, Friday, September 23rd, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Sutfin Funeral Chapel, 273 S.
