Ruth Louise Malan Hendricks, 78, of Stratton Court died at 9 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 4, 2001, at Columbus Regional Hospital.

A 1940 graduate of Columbus High School, Mrs. Hendricks was a member of First Christian Church for more than 55 years, teaching a toddlers' Sunday school and volunteering as a teacher's helper for many years.

She also was a volunteer with various organizations including the Free Child Care Clinic of Columbus and the hospital's Ladies Auxiliary.

She was a former employee of Arvin Industries.

During the Iranian hostage crisis in the early 1980s, Mrs. Hendricks displayed an American flag until the hostages were released. Her efforts, part of a nationwide vigil, were featured on three Indianapolis television stations, a Fort Wayne radio station and articles in The Republic. She also was visited and thanked personally by the U.S. ambassador to Algeria and Columbus resident, Ulric Haynes.

The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Barkes, Inlow & Weaver Funeral Home on Washington Street with the Rev. Matt Malott officiating. Calling will be from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday and from 11:30 a.m. until service time Monday. Burial will be at Garland Brook Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the Cheer Fund or the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund.

Mrs. Hendricks was born in Wapella, Ill., Jan. 9, 1923, the daughter of Orville and Thelma Zilles Malan. She married Gerald Hendricks June 25, 1944, at First Christian Church. He survives.

Also surviving are children, Edwin Hendricks of Delaware, Ohio, Judith Cardassilaris of Columbus, Anthony Hendricks of Seymour, Cynthia Sublette of Columbia, Tenn., and Ellen Hendricks of Jasper; grandchildren, Michael Sublette, Tanya Cobb, Nicole Cardassilaris, Shannon Crittenden,and Wendy, Matthew, Heidi and Elizabeth Hendricks; brothers and sisters, Barbara Strahl, Joan Weddle, Esther Rutledge, Phyllis McQueary, Karen Streeval, Howard, Fred, Bob, and Philip Malan and Faye Bracher; and two great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a son, Daniel Gerald Hendricks; a brother, Orville Malan Jr.; and a sister, Thelma Ellen Chelf.

The funeral for Ruth L. Hendricks, 74, of Stratton Court was Monday at Barkes, Inlow & Weaver Funeral Home with the Rev. Matt Malott officiating. Nicole Cardassilaris and Tony Hendricks were eulogists. Dan Wallace was organist.

Burial was at Garland Brook Cemetery. Pallbearers were Wendy, Anthony and Matthew Hendricks, Daniel and Michael Sublette, Shannon Crittenden, Michael Smith and Tanya Cobb.

Mrs. Hendricks died Thursday, Oct. 4, 2001, at Columbus Regional Hospital.
