Eleanor (Mahoney) McCarthy, resident of Providence Place, Holyoke and longtime resident of Westfield, MA, died Saturday in a local nursing home. She was a 14 year elementary teacher in Westfield. Previous teaching assignments were in the Amherst, Russell, Southwick and Monroe school systems. Born in Westfield, the daughter of William J. and Elizabeth (Dunn) Mahoney, she attended the local schools, graduating from Westfield High in 1935. She graduated from Westfield State Teacher's College in 1939 and did graduate work at B.U., Springfield and Westfield State Colleges. A lifelong member of St. Mary's parish, she was a member of its confraternity of the Most Holy rosary and a 33 year member of the Daughters of Isabella, bishop Beaven Circle. She taught Christian Doctrine for many years and organized and co-directed the SPRED programs-the special religious education for the handicapped of the five catholic parishes for five years. Her other affiliations were the retired Educators Assoc. of Mass and the former Noble Hospital Auxiliary. In late years she enjoyed oil painting as a past-time. She was predeceased by her beloved husband, William F. of 61 years in 2007. She leaves her beloved daughter, Francine Ewing and husband David of South Hadley, her cherished granddaughter, Ann Marie Blackak of Cheyenne, WY and her husband Adam and great-grandson Tristan William Blackak. Her grandson Frank Belliore of East Longmeadow. She also leaves her sister-in-law Helen Mahoney of CA; five step-grandchildren and sister-in-law Barbara McCarthy of Naples, FL, four nephews and a grand-niece and grand-nephew. She was pre-deceased by two brothers, Philip in 1937 and Richard in 1954. Eleanor's Funeral will be Wed. 9:30 a.m. from the Robert E. Cusack Funeral Home, 94 Main St.-Rte 20, followed by a mass of Christian burial in St. Mary's church at 10:30 a.m., burial will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery, all in Westfield. Visiting hours will be Tuesday afternoon from 4 to 6. Donations in her memory may be made to Jericho, P. O.
