Ellie Mahler died in Des Moines, Iowa on September 27, 2013. She was eighty-eight.

She was born in Chicago on October 20, 1925 to Eugene and Gizella (Lindenbaum) Schwartz.

In 1948, Ellie married Irwin Mahler. A professor at Occidental College, Irwin died in 1988.

The Mahlers loved to entertain and travel. They always returned to their home in Glendale. A lover of classical music, she was skilled in needlework, crocheting, Japanese punch-needle, and famous for her cheesecake. She was an avid reader, a fan of the LA Times crossword daily and a wicked bridge player.

A longtime resident of Glendale, she will be buried in Forest Lawn Glendale in a private memorial service on October 26, 2013.

Surviving are sons, Gregory (Marjorie) of Richmond, Indiana and David of Des Moines, Iowa; grandchildren, Alden, Darcy, Paul, and Thom, and their spouses; and two great-grandchildren.
