Barbara Andrews Benson, died at home in Marathon, Wisconsin on Jan. 5, 1999, of cancer.
She was born Nov. 19, 1926 in Wilmington, NC, the daughter of Karl and Grace Mahler. She graduated in 1947 from Randolph-Macon Women's College in Lyunchburg, VA, where she was elected to Phi Beta Kappa.
In June of that year, she married Dr. George Reid Andrews. He preceded her death in 1977.
Mrs. Benson moved to Wausau with her family in 1960. From 1970 to 1982 she worked for Wausau Insurance, serving as director of the com- pany's affirmative action program.
During these years she also helped found The Woman's Community, and was a member of its board of Directors. A long-time member of the Universalist Unitarian Church, she served on its board of trustees from 1980 to 1982.
In 1982, Mrs. Benson retired from Wausau Insurance to begin a second career as a lawyer. She attended the University of Wisconsin Law School, earning her law degree in 1985. Re- turning to Wausau, she served on the Wausau Police and Fire Commission and on the Marathon County Civil Service Commission. After several years in private practice, she joined Wisconsin Judicare, a nonprofit le- gal services agency, as a staff attor- ney in 1988. In addition to her general staff work, Mrs. Benson directed Native American Elders Outreach Project, traveling to reservations throughout Northern Wisonsin to provide legal services to elderly na- tive Americans. In 1994 she received the State Bar Pro Bono Award as the outstanding legal services attorney in the state of Wisconsin. She retired from Judicare in 1997.
In 1994, she became the wife of Burton Benson. He survives. She is also survived by her three children and three grandchildren.
