Lugarda "Luggie" C. Leyba, age 77, a resident of Belen, NM, passed away on March 30, 2005. Lugarda was a member of Our Lady of Belen Catholic Church. Luggie was a fantastic cook, and her family and friends never missed a chance to enjoy a meal in her home. Luggie loved to crochet and loved baseball and was a huge Los Angeles Dodgers and New York Yankees fan. Luggie especially loved her family, and she put in many air miles flying to see her family and grandchildren. Luggie worked for Los Alamos National Laboratories in Los Alamos, NM, for 16 years. Luggie then moved to California, where she met and married the love of her life, Tom. Luggie retired from Hughes Aircraft in Torrance, CA in 1986 after 17 years of outstanding service. The family would like to give a very heart felt thank you to the staff of Zia Hospice and especially a very special thank you to nurses, Lorraine, Cathy and Karen for the kind and caring manner in which they cared for Luggie and her family. Luggie was preceded in death by her parents, Elizardo and Elena Maestas, brothers, Procopio Maestas and Art Maestas, sisters, Eva Serrano, Tonita Trujillo, and Papilia Jaramillo. Luggie is survived by her loving husband of 36 years, Tom V. Leyba, daughter, Hilda and her husband, Joe Hidalgo, her son, Freddie J. Martinez and his wife, Theresa, her sister, Lita Gallegos, a special niece, Francis Madrid and her brother, Quirino Maestas. Luggie is also survived by seven grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, and many loving nieces and nephews. A viewing will be held at Our Lady of Belen Catholic Church on Friday, April 1, 2005 from 6:30 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. The Rosary will be recited at 7:00 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, April 2, 2005 at Our Lady of Belen at 9:00 a.m. Interment will take place at Our Lady of Belen Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers will be Johnny Jaramillo, Leroy Maestas, Tommy Martinez, Freddie K. Martinez, Jerald Hidalgo, Ruben Maestas. Honorary Pallbearers will be Robert Valencia, Anselmo Serrano and David Leyba.
