Ole Madsen was a Danish convert who came with his family and traveled with the Willie Company to join the Saints in Zion: Ole 41, Ane 44, Johanna Marie 15, Christene 13, Anna Marie 10, and Anders 5. He and Ane left several other children from Ane's first marriage in Denmark.
Ole was a strong farmer and laborer and did much to lighten the loads of others along the journey. He also learned to hunt buffalo. A fellow traveler recorded in his diary on September 3, 1856: “4 o'clock up, 7 o'clock prayer, 8 o'clock departure. We traveled several miles over hill and dale and saw buffalo by the thousands. During the noon hour Ole Madsen shot a large buffalo and an Englishman another. Both were distributed, about 2 pounds per person.”
However, Ole's strength and fortitude left him after the tortuous ascent of Rocky Ridge and on into Rock Creek Hollow, and he died after arriving there. He was buried with 12 others in a common grave at Rock Creek Hollow.
Six of those buried were Danish converts, and at least two others who died and were buried there came from Ole's same little branch in Denmark (Nils Anderson and Ane Olsen).
Mormon Pioneer Overland Travel, James G. Willie Company (1856); Age at departure: 41
