Wilhelm Heinrich Mader was born March 27th, 1830 in Wuettenberg Germany. He immigrated in 1850 to the US, after the death of his mother, when he was in his early twenties. He had 3 older brothers already here in the states, and was the youngest male at home; no doubt to care for his mother. He became a citizen in 1856. The physical description of William Henry (the Americanized Citizen), was a man with blue eyes, low forehead, large nose and 6 ft 1/2 inch. The pictures do show him to be a large man.
During the various census he is listed as a Drayman, a grocer, a keeper of a Saloon, and builder of roads. He was initially in business with one of his brothers in the grocery business when The Great Fire of 1852 (right up there with the fire in Chicago with the damage it caused to the residence of Chillicothe), burned him out. The brother moved elsewhere and Wm. Henry was left to fend for himself and start anew. It appears he had a variety of jobs to support himself, his wife, and his 7 children.
he died of a blood tumor of the neck, after being bed ridden for a couple of weeks. He was a well respected man, and one of the older men in the city at the time. He died at the age of 65.
