Lester Maddox
Birth: Sep. 30, 1915
Fulton County
Georgia, USA
Death: Jun. 25, 2003
Fulton County
Georgia, USA

Governor of Georgia. He was a restaurateur who became a symbol of segregationist defiance and then governor in a fluke election. He became famous in the 1960s when he closed and then sold his Pickwick fried chicken restaurant in Atlanta rather than serve blacks. He became governor when neither he nor his Republican opponent received the majority of the vote and the Democratic controlled state legislature chose Maddox to be governor. He served from 1967-71 but state law barred him from succeeding himself, so he served the next four years as lieutenant governor where he constantly battled the man who succeeded him as governor, President-to-be Jimmy Carter. He ran again for governor in 1974 and a final time in 1990 losing both times. (bio by: Ron Moody)
