Betty Wheless Mackie, 85, a resident of 104 Pine Tree Drive, died Friday, February 13, 2009 at Granville Medical Center. A native of Franklin County, the fifth of seven children born to William and Mary Benton Wheless on July 29, 1923 in Bunn, NC.
Betty graduated from Peace College in Raleigh and worked after school prior to meeting her previously deceased husband, John D. Mackie while he was in school at NCSU. They got married on August of 1948, settled in Oxford in 1950 and lived there until the present.
Betty was a loving mother who always worried about others before herself, early on she spent much of her energy raising her two children while working at Suburban Propane. She was a devoted member of Oxford Baptist Church where she regularly attended and spent time managing the nursery. In her later years she struggled with a variety of illnesses but always tried to keep up with her friends whom she will miss dearly.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Monday at Oxford Baptist Church by Dr. Steven Bolton. Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery.
Surviving are a daughter, Rosalyn Mackie of Cary; a son, Dal Mackie (Susan) of Wake Forest; grandchildren, Kam Mackie, Jay Mackie, both of Raleigh; step grandchildren, Lauren Bell of Wilmington, Matthew and Josh Bell of Wake Forest; a sister, Irene Ray of Bunn; sister-in- law, Ginnie Wheless of Bunn; brother-in-law, Lloyd Ness of Portland, OR; and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family would like to express appreciation for the doctors and nurses at Granville Medical Center who fought hard in a losing battle and to the staff at Brantwood Nursing Center for their care of Betty over the last four months. The family also appreciates the care and concern shown by Willa Jean Richards, Carolyn Boyd, and Margaret Parham.
Flowers accepted or memorials may be made to Oxford Baptist Church, P.O. Box 398, Oxford, NC 27565 or to one's favorite charity.
Visitation 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. Sunday evening at the Eakes Funeral Home in Oxford and at other times at the home.
