Arletha Mack Coleman departed this life Saturday, May 10th. She was born February 3, 1941 in Bennetts-ville, SC., the 2nd of 6 children of the late Thomas Mack, Sr., and Gladys Purcell Mack.
Arletha attended the Bennettsville public schools, Marlboro County, SC; Clinton Junior College, Rock Hill, SC; and in 1963 earned a BA in French at Benedict College, Columbia, SC. Arletha met her husband, John Coleman, in June of 1963. They began a love affair and were married since June of 1964.
Arletha's career path included teaching in the Cheraw, SC, School System; employment with the NYC Department of Public Welfare; and employment as plant supervisor at The Hershey Chocolate Company. During her tenure there, she was actively involved with the United Way of Central PA. Upon retirement, she joined her husband in operating the family mortgage business.
Since 1989, Arletha was an active member of Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church where she instituted the LEAP of FAITH Youth Educational Achievement Program; participated in the Esther Missionary Circle; and was a former Girl Scouts Leader. She was a charter member of "E.B.O.N.Y. P.L.A.Y.E.R.S.," an investment club; a 29-year member of "JUST US," a mothers/friends social club; and a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. Arletha was "Mom" and "Grandmother" to many who had come to know her.
Arletha leaves behind her devoted husband and friend John; 2 sons, John Feldon of Chapel Hill, NC, and John Garrett of San Francisco, CA; 7 grandchildren, Christopher, Imani, Khalid and Dwaud Coleman and Janaia West of Chapel Hill, Kenya West of Harrisburg, and Reese Nathaniel Barlup-Coleman of Camp Hill; 2 aunts, Willamae Zimmerman of NYC, and Emma Smith of Bowie, MD; 1 uncle, Jonas T. Bright of NYC; 3 brothers and a sister, Thomas Mack of Hartsdale, NY, Johnny Mack of Fayetteville, NC, Jerome Mack and Clara Kodah, both of NYC; 5 brothers-in-law, Frank Kodah, Roland Burroughs, and Richard Carson, all of NYC, Irvin Walker of TX, and James Coleman of Gaithersburg, MD; 8 sisters-in-law, Betty Murrell of Baltimore, MD, Sandra Carson, Barbara Burroughs, Geraldean Sartor and Selene Davis, all of NYC, Anna Coleman of Gaithersburg, Mary Mack of Fayetteville, and Angela Jackson of Laurel, MD; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
For those left behind, Arletha would say to you, "Don't cry for me for I am in a much better place. Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding and He will take care of you."
Arletha's Life will be Celebrated at 11 a.m., Saturday, May 17, 2008, at her church, 20 Locust Street, Steelton. Viewings will be held from 6 to 8 p.m., Friday, May 16th, at Wallace Funeral Directors, 106 Agnes Street, Harrisburg, and from 9:30 to 11 a.m., Saturday, May 17th, at her church, with AKA Services at 10:15 a.m. Interment will be in Paxtang Cemetery.
