Donald served as a Second Lieutenant & Co-Pilot on B-17 "Vertical Shaft" #42-29956, 544th Bomber Squadron, 384th Bomber Group, Heavy, U.S. Army Air Forces during World War II.

He resided in Erie County, New York prior to the war.

He enlisted in the Army Air Corps on August 29, 1940, prior to the war, in Buffalo, New York. He was noted as being employed as a Clerk and also as Single, without dependents.

Donald was "Killed In Action" when his B-17 was hit by enemy flak and crashed in Germany and during the war. Donald and 1st Lt. Hausenfluck, who were both wounded, held the plane steady so that the rest of the crew could bail out. The others all survived. He was awarded a Air Medal and a Purple Heart.
