Mary Sophia Douglas was born April 18, 1930, in Waddington, she was a daughter of John and Margaret D. Scotty MacCallum.

She modeled for the Surprise Store, Nathan Frank's Department Store and Empsall's.

She graduated in 1947 from Ogdensburg Free Academy and in 1950 from St. Lawrence State Hospital School of Nursing, where she was salutatorian of her class.

Mrs. Douglas attended Mater Dei College, where she also was school nurse, and later transferred to Potsdam State University College, where she received a bachelor's degree in 1966 in psychology and English.

She married Harold W. "Buck" Doe on Dec. 26, 1950, at Sacred Heart chapel with Mr. Doe's brother, the Rev. Vernon Doe, officiating. The marriage ended in divorce.

She married Robert J. Douglas on June 16, 1973, at Ogdensburg. Mr. Douglas died July 9, 1999.

Mrs. Douglas was a staff nurse, head nurse and supervisor at St. Lawrence State Hospital, now St. Lawrence Psychiatric Center. In 1966, she was assigned the task of establishing and teaching a federal grant program and taught the first course that trained psychiatric therapy aides.

She later joined the faculty at Canton Agricultural and Technical College, where she was a psychiatric nursing instructor and part of the medical-surgical nursing program.

She returned to the psychiatric center as an instructor in the school of nursing from 1971 until the school closed in 1981 and then was administrator at the center's Trinity facility. She also was a caseworker for the St. Lawrence County Department of Social Services, Canton, for a time.

Active in the community, she was a member of the Ogdensburg Narcotics Guidance Council for many years and was co-chairwoman of a program establishing a crisis intervention hot line in Ogdensburg.

She was a life member and former president of the School of Nursing Alumni Association, a life member of the American Nurses Association, a member of Ogdensburg Command Performances and a former member of Francis Hanbridge American Legion Post 69.

Mrs. Douglas enjoyed the outdoors, feeding birds, gardening and writing poetry. She had made trips to Venice and other parts of Europe and spent winters in Florida.
