Canadian Military Officer. Originally a constable with the North-West Mounted Police, in 1900, James MacBrien would follow many of his comrades and volunteer to serve with the South African Constabulary during the Second Boer War. In 1906, MacBrien left the constabulary and joined the Canadian army. With the outbreak of World War One, now Major General MacBrien was assigned command of the 12th Infantry Brigade, Canadian Expeditionary Force and would serve there until war's end. In 1919, he was appointed Chief of the General Staff of the Canadian Army and would serve in the position until his retirement in 1927. In 1931, MacBrien returned to the police force when he was appointed commissioner of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, serving until his death in 1938.
