AMBROSE R MCKENZIE CUMBERLAND Ambrose Raymond McKenzie, 93, of Cumberland, died Saturday, Nov. 8, 2003, at his residence.
Born Sept. 27, 1910, in Cumberland, he was the son of the late Walter Edward McKenzie and Catherine Elizabeth (Boch) McKenzie. He was also preceded in death by one son, Robert Ambrose Mckenzie; one brother, Michael McKenzie; two sisters, Regina Manley and Catherine Kelly; and three great-grandsons.
Mr. McKenzie was retired with 46 years of service at the Celanese Plant. He had been a Textile Supervisor. He was a member of SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church.
Mr.McKenzie was known internationally by the call sign, W3BHE. He became a licensed amateur radio operator in 1931. He learned to speak spanish later in life to help him communicate with Latin America. Mr. McKenzie enjoyed linking families with radio-phone patches throughout the world, especially after natural disasters, such as earthquakes and hurricanes, made it impossible for Americans here to reach relatives in South America by any other means. He was a member of the Mountain Amateur Radio Operators.
Survivors include his wife of 59 years,Margaret Ann (Young) McKenzie ; four sons, Michael F. McKenzie, Rawlings, Joseph E. McKenzie, Dunedin, Fla., John P. McKenzie, Cumberland, and Stephen M. McKenzie, Rawlings; two daughters, Mary Ann Emery, Morgantown, W.Va., and Lenore V. McKenzie-Morris, Surfside Beach, S.C.; two brothers, Paul McKenzie, Clarksburg, W.Va., and Leo E. McKenzie, Fulton; three sisters, Margaret Strong, Westernport, Helen Cessna and Bernadette Browning, both of Silver Spring; 21 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and two great-great grandchildren.
Friends will be received at the Upchurch Funeral Home, P.A., 202 Greene St., Cumberland, on Monday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. The rosary will be recited at the funeral home on Tuesday at 8:30 p.m.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church on Wednesday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. DeSales Young, OFM, Cap and the Rev. Valentine Young, OFM, Cap, brothers-in-law of Mr. McKenzie, and the Rev. James Kurtz, OFM, Cap, Pastor of SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, as co-celebrants.
Interment will be in the parish cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Food Pantry at SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, 125 Fayette St., Cumberland, MD 21502.
