Marjorie Lyon was born to Stuart and Laura Davis on April 5, 1932, in the farming community of Ruthven, Iowa. Like her five brothers, she was born at home on the farm.
It seemed to her mother that there was an abundance of boys at home, so she was overjoyed to have a daughter. Her father was instrumental in opening the first Adventist church school in town. When the weather was good, Marge and her brothers sometimes rode to school bareback on their old work horse.
The Davis family raised corn, soybeans, livestock, and maintained a dairy herd. With the harvest from their large garden, the family never had to worry about food, even during the lean years of World War II. Marge was a 4-H member and won a blue ribbon at the county fair for the heifer she raised.
Marge was proud of her Swedish heritage and enjoyed collecting Swedish Christmas ornaments. She also remembered her mother making coffee at Christmas, brewed in Swedish tradition with eggshells to achieve a silky appearance. In later years, she enjoyed attending the Scandinavian Festival in Junction City, Oregon with her daughters and grandchildren.
During her high school years, Marge attended Oak Park Academy in Nevada, Iowa. She served as vice president of the graduating class of 1950. One of the things she enjoyed most was attending alumni weekends. She maintained lifelong friendships with her classmates, and even spoke cheerfully on the phone to some of them on the day she passed away.
She attended Union College before her marriage to Melvin Lyon. They were married for 50 years, had four daughters, and six grandchildren.
For many years Marge worked as an accounting clerk at various church entities in Indonesia, Japan, Singapore, and in California, Georgia, and Oregon.
Marge's country roots remained deep throughout her life. She loved pictures and calendars with images of barns, tractors, and farm scenes. She always referred to herself as a country girl.
Marjorie Pauline Davis Lyon passed away on April 14, 2007. To honor her wishes, her daughters have brought her back to Ruthven, Iowa where she has been laid to rest at the Crown Hill Cemetery.
