Josephine was born Ja. 23, 1898 in Salinas, Calif. and died Jan. 5, 1994 in Bakersfield. She was the seventh child of Thomas Lynn and Hannah Elizabeth Cavanaugh. Her roots were in Ireland and Canada with her grandparents having come west to Calif. in 1846. As a young child she lived on a farm outside of Gilroy and later in San Jose. Childhood friends included John Steinbeck and Phoebe Apperson Hearst.
She graduated from San Jose High School in 1916 and San Jose Normal School (later known as San Jose State College). After graduation, she took a teaching position in Lassen County, Calif. She later moved to and taught in Taft where she met her future husband Jean L. Philippe, Sr. They were married in San Jose and Philippe was transferred to Taft as manager of the National Supply Co. Mr. Philippe's father had come to Bakersfield from Gap, France in 1883. In Bakersfield he was a sheep rancher and owner of the Universal Hotel. Josephine's son, Jean Philippe III was born in Taft in 1923. The family moved back to Bakersfield in 1936.
During World War II, Josephine taught in Lamont when her son Jean was in the service. After the war, she substituted in the city schools and at Lakeside School. Mr. Philippe preceded her in death in 1967. Josephine became an active member of Bakersfield Community House. She enjoyed playing bridge and sewing in the Craft Room. She was still a member of Community House until the time of her death and made many lasting friends. She was an avid reader. It was her favorite pastime next to traveling.
She married James Burke, Sr. in December of 1973. They shared several happy years together until he died in 1976. Mrs. Burke is survived by her son, Jean L. Philippe who is the retired Principal of East Bakersfield High School. She shared many happy years with her grandchildren, Matthew Philippe, Claire Dennen, Diane Philippe and Linda Basman. In her later years she found happiness with visits from her great grandchildren: Ryan and Sara Basman, Amanda and Katy Philippe and Julie Dennen. Also surviving are her stepson, Jim Burke; step daughter, Sally Rainey and step granddaughter, Mikie Hay; sister-in-law Jeanette Krausse and daughter-in-law, Margaret Philippe.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Bakersfield community House. The American Cancer Society or charity of choice.
