Information from survey

Miss Rail notes that her information came from Mrs. Anderson's obituary. That obituary, published April 23, 2008, in The Spokesman Review, is summarized below; beneath that is information obtained in an Ancestry.com search.

Thelma Irene Anderson, 91, passed away peacefully on Sunday, April 20, 2008, at home with her family. Graveside services were to be held April 24, 2008, at Greenwood Memorial Terrace, with chaplain services to be provided by VFW Post 1435 Auxiliary. Donations to Hospice of Spokane or to the VFW Auxiliary were requested in lieu of flowers.

Irene was born December 30, 1916, to Walter and Edna Pearl Lutrell in Chwelah, Washington. She was a 1936 graduate of Jenkins High School.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Fred C. Anderson; her parents; and her brother Samuel. She was survived by three daughters, Judith (Mrs. Harry) Sherbourne, Karen (Mrs. Joe) Brodin, and Susan Williams; seven grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and a brother-in-law, Don Anderson.

Irene worked at several clothing shops. After retirement she worked as a homemaker; she enjoyed gardening, designing and sewing clothes, cooking and baking, swimming, and dancing. She was a Life Member of VFW Auxiliary #1435.
-----------------------------------
In 1920 Irene, age three, lived in Chewelah, Washington with her parents and little brother, Samuel Richard Luttrell, Sr. (1918-1947.) Her father worked as a laborer, her mother as a homemaker. (I could not locate the family's 1930 US Census enumeration.)

Irene married Harvey Marvin Peckenpaugh of Mason City, Washington, in Spokane, Washington, on August 3, 1936. (Mr. Peckenpaugh had been born in Idaho in 1901.) In 1940 the couple lived in Sunnyvale, California, with seven month-old daughter Judith Gail Peckenpaugh. (Judith married Gerald L. Nichols in 1958 and Michael W Daniel in 1969.)

I could find no record of when Mr. Peckenpaugh died, or whether Irene's marriage to him ended with his death or in divorce. (He is not mentioned in her obituary.) Family trees on Ancestry.com state (without sources) that the couple divorced in 1939, which seems unlikely given that they lived together and were married in the 1940 US Census.

In any event, at some time after 1940 she married Fred C. Anderson.

Sources include US Census enumerations for 1920 (with parents and brother Chewelah, Stevens County, Washington) and 1940 (with first husband and daughter in Sunnyvale, Santa Clara, California;) Idaho, Birth Index, 1861-1912 (re: Mr. Peckenpaugh;) California Birth Index, 1905-1995 (re: Judith Gail Peckenpaugh;) California, Marriage Index, 1949-1959 (two entries re: Judith;)
