Margaret Lunde Clausen, 95, was born southeast of Askov, Minnesota on August 22, 1908, to Hans and Kirsten (Sand) Lunde, recent Danish immigrants. She was baptized Margrethe (pronounced Mar-Great-a) Jensen Lunde at the Askov Town Hall, which served as a temporary church for the fast-growing community. Margaret attended school in Askov until the 10th grade. She was involved in Girl Scouts, the sewing club, and the Young People’s Society. After 10th grade, Margaret went to the Twin Cities, Lake of the Isles area, to housekeep for a few families. Many young girls at this time did this because the pay was better in the bigger cities. At about the age of 18, Margaret came back home to Askov and started working for Conrad Christensen’s Bakery. She earned six dollars a week plus room and board. It was around this time that Margaret started dating Louis O. Clausen, also of Askov. They had attended school together for years, but had never dated. Their first date was at Clark’s Corner, east of Askov. Louie said that from that first date he knew that Margaret was “The One”.

Louie and Margaret were married on October 29, 1929, in Pine City, Minnesota. The happy couple made their home on the Kettle River. Their two sons, Gilbert and Donald, were born while they lived there. After living there for eight years, they moved east of Askov for three years and then moved to the Lunde farm for 14 years (John and Judy Petersen’s current home). They eventually moved into town and lived in a house for nine years. Then Louie and Margaret decided to build a home of their own where they lived for many happy years.

Margaret was a member of the Danish Sisterhood Society and Bethlehem Lutheran Church. Margaret loved gardening, cross-stitch, knitting, playing pinochle, cooking, entertaining her family and friends, and traveling. She and Louie traveled to all parts of the United States, many times to visit relatives. They also made a trip to visit their parent’s homeland, Denmark, and surrounding countries. Margaret loved her family very much. She was always interested in what each and every one of her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren were doing. Her love extended to her numerous nieces and nephews, also. Many of them often said they felt like Margaret was their mother or their grandmother. Undeniably, Margaret’s greatest love of all by far was her husband, Louie. They were inseparable until Louie’s death in 1998. They had been married 69 wonderful years.

Margaret passed away on July 26, 2004, at the Pine Medical Center in Sandstone, Minnesota. She had attained the age of 95 years, 11 months, and 4 days. Margaret is survived by son, Gilbert (Mary) of Brownsville, Texas; daughter-in-law, Pauline of Bruno; Cherrie (Bob) Muster of Coon Rapids; and LeeAnn Anderson of Wrenshall, Margaret is also survived by nine great grandchildren, Steven, Cindy, Amber, Genny, Katie, David, Matthew, Alex and Meghan; three step great grandchildren, Jason, Celeste, and Jordan; and one step great great grandchild, Skyllor. Margaret was preceded in death by her parents, Hans and Kirsten; brothers, Sigrid, Aage, Elmer, Viggo, Werner, and Hans; sister, Agnes Krantz; son, Donald, and grandson, David. We will miss Margaret more than words can say and cherish the many memories that we have made with her. It gives us comfort to think she is in heaven, holding hands with her love, Louie, and still watching over us. We love you.

Funeral services for Margaret Clausen were held Friday, July 30, at 2 p.m. at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Askov. Visitation was Thursday, July 29, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Hansen Mankei Funeral Home in Sandstone.
