Phyllis Bernice (Shafer) Lund, 72, Peru, passed away Sunday, Feb. 13, 2005 at St. Vincent's Hospital, Indianapolis, from cancer.
She was born July 15, 1932 to Floyd and Mabel (Morton) Shafer, Route 2, Peru. She graduated from Chili High School in 1950, earned a B.S. degree from North Manchester College and her M.A. degree from Ball State University in elementary education. Phyllis began her teaching career at Gilead Elementary School, and later taught in Peru Community Schools for 28 years at South Peru, Lincoln and Victory in grades 2 and 3.
Phyllis married James L. Lund on July 12, 1959. They have been married for more than 45 years, and reside at 2145 W. Willow Lane, Peru. She is a member of the Sharon Baptist Church, 7012 East and 50 North, Flora, where her husband has served as pastor for 17 years.
She was commissioned a Kentucky colonel in 2002 by the Commonwealth of Kentucky by Paul E. Patton, governor, for outstanding leadership in education. She is a member of Indiana State Teachers Association, Indiana Retired Teachers Association and Sigma Delta Pi Epsilon Chapter, Peru.
Survivors besides her husband include three daughters, Leasa Ann Culp and husband Brad, Alpharetta, Ga., Rebecca Lynn Zepick and husband Kent, Indianapolis, and Lora Lee Dice and husband Lester, Chambersburg, Pa.; four granddaughters, Alexa and Lauren Culp and Ashley and Brittany Dice; three grandsons, Zachary Culp and Caleb and Connor Zepick; three brothers, Lorn Shafer and wife Pearline, Donald Shafer and wife Sarah, and Raymond Shafer and wife Eunice; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents and one sister, Evelyn Martin.
Visitation will be held from 2 to 7 p.m. Friday at Eikenberry-Eddy Funeral Home, Peru, with the funeral service following at 7 p.m., with the Rev. George Hapner and the Rev. Robert Adelsperger officiating.
A Service of Celebration will be held Saturday at Sharon Baptist Church, 7012 East and 50 North, Flora at 1:30 p.m., with viewing two hours before the service. Dr. Robert Hammond, American Baptist Churches of Indiana and Kentucky, will officiate. There will be an all church dinner at 11:30 a.m.
Interment will be at Mount Hope Cemetery, Peru. Eikenberry-Eddy Funeral Home, Peru, has charge of arrangements. Contributions may be sent to the American Cancer Society or to Gideons International for Bible distribution.
