An obituary published in the Shelbyville Democrat on July 25, 1918 for Mrs. Lucia R. Smith-Lufkin, a former resident of Shelbyville, and a sister of Mrs. George D. Chaffee, stated that she had died at her home in Normal, Ill on Thursday [July 18, 1918]. The remains were brought to the home of Mr. and Mrs. George D. Chafee where funeral services were held on the lawn of Kaskia Woods, Rev. Dr. Baker , pastor of the Episcopal Church in Bloomington officiating. Rev. J. L. Douthit, a lifelong friend of the decedent assisted in the services. Burial was made in Glenwood. Mrs. Lufkin was born in Bloomington, Ind., May 10, 1825, therefore at the time of her death was 93 years old. She was a daughter of the late Addison and Nancy Smith, with whom she came to Shelbyville when a child of but six years. In the fall of 1855 she was married to Charles Dexter Lufkin, who for years was a business partner of Col. D. C. Smith, brother of Mrs. Lufkin and a resident of Normal. Mr. Lufkin died in 1855 and a few years later his widow moved to Normal which had since been her home. Mrs. Lufkin was survived by five children. Two sons, Charles and Frank Lufkin were residents of Hawaii. Another son, Dr. Harry Lufkin, resided in St. Paul, Minn. The other two, Dudley and Miss Charlotte Lufkin, had remained with their mother. Colonel D. C. Smith, of Normal, for many years in business in Shelbyville and still owned much real estate in the city and county, was the only surviving brother of Mrs. Lufkin. The surviving sisters were Mrs. Kate Thornton of Washington, D. C., widow of the late Judge Anthony Thornton, Mrs. Olivia Craighead of Boston, Mass., and Mrs. George D. Chafee of Shelbyville.
