Mary Ann Hess was born in Quincy, IL on August 27, 1849 where she lived with her parents until 1862, when she with her parents removed to Clark County, Missouri. In 1878 she was married to Samuel Dannenhauer and to this union were born two sons, one dying in infancy. Death claimed the young husband in 1881 and she with her baby boy went back to her parents where she spent her widowhood. In 1891 she was united in marriage to John Martin Ludwig of near Lewistown, Mo. but death came into the home and took away the husband. She and her step-son Samuel Ludwig continued to reside at the home place where she died June 15, 1917 at the age of 67 years, 9 months and 15 days. One son, Charlie Donnenhauer came from Las Vegas, New Mexico just in time to receive once more the blessing of the mother before she passed to the great beyond. Those left to mourn their loss are Samuel Ludwig, a step-son, one brother Phillip Hess of near Lewistown, and three sisters, Mrs. Amelia Bick, Mrs. Julia Baker and Matilda Hess of Clark Co., MO, all of whom were present at the funeral. Others from a distance were a niece, Miss Bessie Baker and a nephew Walter Bick of Clark Co., MO. The deceased expressed her faith in her savior early in life and united with the M. E. Church in Quincy, IL in 1861. Her Christian character was plainly shown in her devotion to her family and her service and kindness to all she met. Funeral services were held at the home 5 miles southeast of Lewistown, conducted by F. J. Young pastor of the M. E. Church of LaBelle. Internment in the Lewistown Cemetery.
