Bertha Robinson Luckey was born December 8, 1919 to Adam and Hattie Robinson in Esterwood, La. She was baptized at an early age at White Rose Church of God in Christ and was a faithful member. She attended the Port Arthur Colored School. She left Port Arthur at the age of 19 to tour the country as a gospel singer in churches and revivals. She settled in Oakland, Ca and married Otis Luckey, who preceded her in death in 1986. She retired from the University of California-Berkley where she worked as a secretary and an administrative assistant. This was a position not held by many blacks in her day. She was a pioneer for racial equality. She was a member of Ephesians Church of God in Christ in Berkley, Ca for over 54 years. There she was well known for being a loving, giving Christian who worked tirelessly in the Church. Bertha Luckey was 91 years young. She was energetic, independent, and self-reliant with a very strong faith.
The family was blessed to return Ms. Bertha home to Port Arthur where she would be surrounded by family to take care of her. She departed this life at Harbor Hospice Hospital in Beaumont, Texas.
Preceding her in death are her parents; her husband; six siblings and their spouses: Percy "Bill" Robinson (Pearlie Mae), Eldridge "Lump" Robinson (Gert), Doris "Nute" Robinson Joseph (Morris), Illen "Gully" Robinson Session (Robert), Lawrence " Johnnie" Robinson (Joyce) and Ruby Robinson Ross (K.P.)
She leaves to cherish her memory, a loving and devoted baby sister Pearline Robinson Ford; her nieces and nephews: Wanda Joseph (Harold), Dwayne Robinson (Royce); Doris Gill (Curtis); Gwen Session Lott; Terrell Session; Mike Jones (Belinda), Deirdre Thigpen (Albert), Kevin Ford (Paulette), Patricia Mooney; Damon Joseph (Tina), Ricky Boozer (Linda), Karen Robinson, and Kawanya Robinson. She is also survived by special friends from Oakland and Berkeley, Calif.: Barbara Holiday, Virgie Smith Judy Tidwell, Mr. and Mrs. Willie R and Mazie Dixon, along with many great nieces and nephews and a host of other relatives and friends.
