ANGEL -- Tonie L. Angel, the founding Principal of Hodgin Elementary School in Albuquerque, died peacefully on July 30, 2008 at the age of 96 in Austin, TX where she had moved two years ago to be close to her son, Ron Angel and her daughter-in-law Jacqueline Angel, both professors at the University of Texas at Austin.
Angel was a lifelong educator whose teaching career began at the age of eighteen in Albuquerque. Over the years, she taught at many elementary schools in and around Albuquerque and Las Vegas, NM. During the 1950's she served as County School Superintendent in San Miguel County where she introduced many educational reforms that improved the quality of rural schools.
Angel retired as Principal of Hodgin Elementary School in 1977 at the age of 65 to move to Las Vegas to be with her husband, Joe Angel, who served as District Judge for the Fourth Judicial District until his retirement. She was preceded in death by her daughter Rita Angel, a professor of music at the University of New Mexico; her husband Joe Angel; four sisters, Rosa Chavez, Bennie Soto, Beulah Gonzalez, and Dora Clarke; and a brother, Fred Lucero. She is survived by her son, Ronald Angel and daughter-in-law Jacqueline of Austin, TX; and a grandson, Matthew Angel, a graduate student at MIT in Boston.
Angel received her Bachelor's degree from the University of New Mexico and her Master's from Highlands University in Las Vegas. She, and three of her sisters, became teachers at a time when women from poor backgrounds had little chance for professional careers. Her career as an educator spanned several decades and over the years she touched many lives and left a lasting impression on future generations.
A Memorial Service held at 9:30 on August 23, 2008.
