LUCE - John R. Luce, son of William and Florence Luce, was born January 18, 1897, in Clarke County, Iowa and passed away August 7, 1968 at the Lucas County Memorial Hospital following a heart attack at the age of 71 years.
His early life was spent on a farm in Clarke County. In 1942, he was united in marriage to Ruby Verle Trumbo Hamilton in Osceola. She died in 1959. Then, on May 27, 1961, he was married to Celesta May McDonald, who passed away on January 18, 1964.
Also preceding him in death were his parents, one son, Donald, who was killed while serving in the Armed Forces in Germany, one daughter, Helen, and a sister, Blanche.
In later years he moved to Chariton where he was employed by Johnson Machine Works, retiring from there in 1962. Since that time he has worked part-time at the Country Chef Restaurant, where he enjoyed the many acquaintances he made, especially with the children.
Survivors include five step-children; Mrs. Harold (Atha) Miller of Des Moines, Mrs. Dwight (Geneva) Wilson of Chariton, Mrs. Kenneth (Geraldine) Jackson of Marion, Everett McDonald of Chariton, and Asa McDonald of Des Moines, as well as one niece, Mrs. Mary Linaman of Casper, Wyo., and 17 grandchildren.
Services were conducted by the Rev. Homer L. Max at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, August 10, 1968 at the Beardsley-Fielding Funeral Home. Interment was at the Coal Glen Cemetery.
