Daughter of David Luce and Martha Robinson Luce. Kirsten and her sister Corinne were killed in the crash of the Amtrak Colonial train in Chase, Maryland, on January 4, 1987. They were returning from a holiday visit with their mother in Washington, D.C.. Kirsten, a junior at Westerly High School, had recently scored in the 99th percentile of the Scholastic Aptitude Test.
The engineer of the train which hit the Colonial had been smoking marijuana on board, just 18 minutes before the crash. He had also skipped critical safety checks that would have shown that the alerter -- a whistle that warns the crew of signal changes -- had been silenced with duct tape. He served four years in prison for manslaughter.
