James Luce of Eugene died Aug. 11 of emphysema due to smoking. He was 77.
Luce was born July 10, 1927, in Aberdeen, Wash., to James Leslie Gupton and Atha Bernice Eggle- ston.
He married Laura Newton in Eugene on Aug. 15, 1954. She died in 1991. He married Lorene Hansen in Reno on Aug. 16, 1996.
He graduated from Mason City High School in Coulee Dam, Wash., and attended Kinman Business College for two years.
He served in the Army during World War II and was on active duty with the Washington State Air National Guard during the Korean War.
He worked a variety of jobs, including heavy construction, payroll and running tugboats. He was a Lane County sheriff's deputy from 1959 to 1963, and worked at Crawford Windor until his retirement.
He collected 78 rpm records, and he enjoyed bowling, photography and traveling.
Survivors include his wife; a son, Jeff of Ephrata, Wash.; two daughters, Jane Hart and Linda Schantol, both of Eugene; a brother, Leland of Washington; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Andreason's Cremation & Burial Service in Eugene was in charge of arrangements.
