(NOTE: Joseph E. Lowery probably never had his portrait taken prior to the Civil War. During the short time he was in Nashville, when most of the surviving photographs of members of the 86th Illinois were taken, Joseph was sick in the hospital and probably never thought about have a portrait made. If, however, he did, they were most often printed in the form of what was called a CDV, a paper picture glued to a heavier card stock about the size of a modern day baseball card, and the soldiers didn't just have one or two copies made. Most of the time, they had a dozen or more made, so they could swap pictures with their tentmates, messmates and for their friends, in the 86th and back home.
Joseph E. Lowery, however, did survive the war and lived late into the 19th century. During his life, Joseph probably had his picture taken dozens of times. I would dearly love to see a copy of a CDV of Joseph in uniform. However, at this point, I would be thrilled just to see some more pictures of him added to his Find A Grave Memorial, even ones of him as an old man. Can anyone help me? Thanks, Baxter)

Private JOSEPH E. LOWREY (LOWERY/LOURY/LOWRY), Co. A, 86th Illinois

Joseph E. Lowrey was born in Illinois the son of John R. Lowry and Sarah J. (____________) Lowry. Joseph E. Lowery was probably born on January 31, 1836. He stated he was 26 when he enlisted in August of 1862, which would place his year of birth as 1836 and the census records of 1860 has him as being 24, which would also suggest 1836 as his year of birth. However, in 1850, he is listed as being 12, which would suggest a 1838 year of birth and the 1880 census has him as being 40, which would suggest a 1840 year of birth.

John R. Lowry was born in Ireland c. 1799 and is believed to have died in or near Eureka, Woodford County, Illinois in the 1850's. Sarah was born c. May __, 1812/15, very likely also in Ireland. Four children are known to have been born to John and Sarah (__________) Lowry. They include;
1. Augustas Fredrick Lowrey (Lowry), born c. October 28, 1833 in Pennsylvania. Augustus, who went by Fredrick, died December 23, 1871 and his mortal remains were laid in the Olio Township Cemetery, Eureka, Woodford County, Illinois. His tombstone states he was aged, 36 y, 1 m & 25 days. Fredrick was almost certainly at least 38 years of age.

2. Joseph E. Lowrey, born c. 1835/36 in Illinois. See his biography below.

3. John R. Lowrey, born September 4, 1845 in Illinois. John R. Lowrey was married to
Sarah M. Clymer (August __, 1848 - 1919) c. 1867/68. John and Sarah moved the family to Missouri in the early 1870's, John's mother going with them. John and Sarah are found in Bates County, Missouri in the 1880 and 1900 census records. In the 1900 census, in which they live in Walnut Township in Bates County, John and Sarah are listed as being the parents of 1 child, who died before 1900, so they have no living children in 1900. John R. Lowrey died on 4 Jun 1905 and his mortal remains were laid in the Salem Cemetery in Foster, Bates County, Missouri. See his Find A Grave #89321697.

4. Virginia Lowrey, born c. 1847/48 in Ohio. Virginia died as an infant in either Ohio or in Illinois.

At the time of the 1850 census, the Lowreys are found in McDonough County, Illinois;
John Lowery M 51 Ireland
Sarah J Lowery F 32 Ireland
Augustas F Lowery M 16 Pennsylvania
Joseph Lowery M 12 Illinois
John Lowery M 4 Illinois

Shortly after this census was taken, John and Sarah Lowry moved the family to Eureka, Illinois or at least the surrounding area in Olio Township of Woodford County, Illinois, where John almost certainly died in the 1850's. Where his mortal remains were laid is not known.
At the time of the 1860 census, Sarah Lowry and her children are found in Olio Township in Woodford County, Ill Here is what is found in the 1860 census;
Sarah Loury, age 46, Ireland
Frederick A Loury, age 27, Pennsylvania
Joseph E Loury, age 24, Illinois
John R Loury, age 15, Illinois
Virginia Loury, age 12, Ohio

Sarah Lowry is believed to have moved to Missouri in the early 1870's with her son, John, and his family. Sarah Jane (________) Lowry/Lowery, the wife of John R. Lowrey, died there in Missouri, according to her stone as being 62y, 3m of age, on 8 Jul 1874 and her mortal remains were laid in the Woodfin Cemetery in Walnut Township, Bates County, Missouri. See her Find A Grave Memorial #53682466.

Now to continue with what we know about Joseph E. Lowrey;
Joseph enlisted at Eureka, Illinois in what would become Co. A of the 86th Regiment of Illinois Volunteer Infantry on August 7, 1862. He was mustered into service with the rest of the 86th at Camp Lyon (near present day Glen Oak Park) in Peoria, IL on Aug. 27, 1862. At the time he was mustered in his name is recorded as Lowery.

Joseph was probably with the regiment when it participated in the Battle of Perryville, Kentucky on Oct. 8, 1862 and then after the Confedetate forces withdrew from Kentucky the men of the 86th marched on to Nashville, Tennessee where they went into winter camp. Joseph became very ill during the winter of 1862/63 and was honorably discharged from the service on Jan. 27, 1863 at Nashville, Tennessee in hopes that he could return home and regain his health. Joseph did return to Woodford County and apparently did regain his health.
Joseph was married to Sarah J. Lowrey were married on April 20, 1874 in Tazewell County, Illinois. Sarah was born c. 1841/45 in Illinois. She is believed to be the daughter of David F. Lowrey, who was born c. 1810 in Ireland and who is found in Tazewell County in the 1855, 1860 and 1870 census records of Tazewell County, Illinois. However, on the death certificate of the woman believed to be the last child of Joseph E. Lowery, Susan Sarah (Lowrey) French, seen below, her mother is listed as Sarah Patterson. This, of course, could be an error.
David F. Lowrey is believed to be the brother of John Lowry, so if Sarah was the daughter of David F. Lowry and David and John Lowry were brothers, that would mean Joseph E. Lowrey and Sarah J. Lowrey were 1st cousins.
D. F. Loury is found in the city of Pekin, Tazewell County, Illinois in the 1860 census. He is already widowed by this time;
D. F. Loury 50 Gentleman Ireland

In 1880, the Lowrys are still found in Pekin. It is not known when David F. Lowry died or where his mortal remains were laid.

Now to continue with Joseph E. Lowrey's biography;
Joseph E. Lowrey and Sarah Jane (Lowrey) Lowrey had at least three sons and one daughter. They are believed to include;
1. George D. Lowrey, born Apr. 14, 1876, in Kansas; died Sep. 12, 1923; married to Ruth __________ and had at least three children, George Roberts Lowrey, born c. 1914/15; Josephine Lowrey, born c. 1912/13; and John L. 3. Robert W. Lowrey, born c. 1880 in Bates County, Missouri. Robert was married to Jessie Belle __________, who was born in 1881 and who died in 1961; Robert and Jessie are known to have had one daughter, Jeannette S. Lowrey, who was born c. 1913/14; Robert died on __________ __, 1926 and his mortal remains were laid in the Wyuka Cemetery in Lincoln, Lancaster County, Nebraska.

4. Susan "Susie" Lowrey, born October __, 1882 in Bates County, Missouri. By 1900, both of Susan's parents were deceased and in the 1900 census, seen below, Susan is found residing with her step-mother, Lida, in Lincoln, Lancaster County, Nebraska.
Susan is believed to be the Susan Sarah (Lowrey) French, who was born on 5 Oct 1882 in
Foster, Bates County, Missouri and who died on 6 Oct 1964 in Kansas City, Jackson County, Missouri. This Susan Sarah Lowrey was married to Charles O. French on 12 Nov 1904 in St. Louis, Missouri. On the marriage certificate, Susan is listed as being from Lincoln, Nebraska, while Charles is from Auburn, Nebraska. This Susan's birth month and year and place of residence at the time of her marriage are all correct for our Susan Lowrey. This Charles and Susan (Lowrey) French are found in Kansas City, Missouri in the 1910, 1920, 1930 and 1940 census records. They have two sons;
A. William W. French (1907-1988)
B. Charles P. French (1911-1980)

In each of these census records, Susan's parents are both listed as having been born in Illinois, which again is correct for our Susan Lowrey. The mortal remains of this Susan Sarah (Lowrey) French were laid to rest in the Mount Moriah Cemetery in Kansas City, Jackson County, Missouri. See her Find A Grave Memorial #150366823. On her death certificate, this Susan Sarah (Lowrey) French's parents are listed as Joseph Lowrey and Sarah Patterson.

Now to continue with what we know about Joseph E. Lowrey and his family;
Joseph and his wife are known to have left Illinois probably before 1875. They may have moved briefly to the Kansas City, Kansas area, where their 1st child was born, but then joined much of the rest of the family in Missouri where they resided in Bates County. At the time of the 1880 census, Joseph E. Lowrey is found in New Home Township, Bates County, Missouri;

Charles Brogan, other M 19 Kentucky
James Hart, other M 24 Missouri

Sarah is believed to have died on December 8, 1894 in or near Foster, Missouri in Bates County. It is not known where her mortal remains were laid.
Joseph is known to have moved at some point after this to Lancaster County, Nebraska, where he is known to have resided in Walton, Nebraska, near Lincoln. After Sarah's death, it appears that Joseph was married to a Lida __________, who was born c. 1850 in Ohio. Joseph E. Lowrey died on April 17, 1899 in or near Lincoln, Lancaster County, Nebraska. His mortal remains were laid in the Wyuka Cemetery in Lincoln, Lancaster County, Nebraska. At the time of the 1900 census, Lida and her four stepchildren are found residing in Ward 3 of the City of Lincoln, Lancaster County, Nebraska;
