Calvin Dean Lowe, 76, passed away Tuesday, June 8, 2004, in St. George, from complications of severe pancreatitis.
Born July 6, 1927, he was the surprise twin born to Clara and Thomas Lowe. His brother Melvin arrived just 20 minutes before Cal.
Growing up in Richfield, he was active in sports, school government, hunting, and fishing. Leaving high school early in his senior year, he went to Logan to attend Utah State University and then served in the Merchant Marines near the end of World War II.
He taught at both East High School and West High School, and was drafted out of the classroom to serve in the Army Signal Corps during the Korean War.
Calvin's formal education was completed at the Bachelor Agricultural College, now known as Southern Utah University, USU, University of Utah, with a Doctorate of Education as his final degree from USU.
On July 17, 1964, he married Mona Wheelwright in the Salt Lake LDS temple.
He was a professor in the College of Business at USU, and over the course of 34 years he taught 18 different subjects and served for a time as the director of management institute and associate dean for extension in the College of Business.
In 1996, at age 70, he and his wife retired to Toquerville, to pursue a "relaxing" life of ranching and real estate. His love of his family, the gospel, beauty of southern Utah, his Black Angus cattle, Kolob Mountain, and Fish Lake surrounded his life and inspired his poetry.
He is survived by his wife, daughters Anita, Orem; Laura, Logan; son, Lorin and wife Amberlee, Orem; sister, Ruth Amberson, Idaho Falls, Idaho; twin brother Melvin Lowe and wife, Betty Lou, Richfield; sister-in-law, Jo Lowe, Elsinore; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, and former students.
