Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. A native of Bennington, Vermont, he received a degree in 1835 from present day Hobart College in upstate New York. After broadening his knowledge of law, he was admitted to the bar and eventually emigrated to Wisconsin where he became an able lawyer. As a member of Wisconsin legislature, he was the editor of the 1858 "The Revised Statues of the State of Wisconsin". His Civil War career began on October 18, 1862 when he enlisted in the 33rd Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. He was later promoted to Colonel and commander of the 46th Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry on March 2, 1865. He was mustered out of the volunteers on September 27, 1865 under honorable conditions. He was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers on October 11, 1865 for "faithful and meritorious service".
