Isabelle “Belle” Herbert's cremated remains were never taken after her death and are still available at Oregon State Hospital to be claimed by anyone who is related.

Belle was born in Ohio in April 1866 (according to the 1900 census) to Irish immigrants Ellen and Hamilton Love, a farmer and shoemaker. Belle's mother was born in 1828. Her father was born in 1808. Her full siblings (all born in Ohio) included Francis (born in 1860), Samuel (about 1861), and William (about 1863). Perhaps Robert (Ohio 1876) was also a brother.

This was a second marriage for Belle's father. Previously he was married to Eliza who died in 1851. Belle's half-siblings from that marriage included David (born in Pennsylvania about 1832), Mary Ann (Pennsylvania about 1834), Eliza Jane (New York about 1837), Alex (New York about 1839), Sarah (Ohio about 1842), Hamilton (Ohio about 1845), Martha (Ohio about 1847), James (Ohio about 1849) and John (Ohio about 1851). It is possible Eliza died of child-birth related problems.

At the time of the census of 1870 Belle was living with her parents and 3 brothers in Oxford, Butler County, Ohio. Her father was in his early 60s and not working at that time. All of the children were younger than 11. It is suspected that her father was not working because he may have been ill or injured. He died on 10/11/1870.

During the 1880 census, Belle was living in Oxford, Butler County, Ohio with her widowed mother and brothers. Belle was 15 and attending school. Her mother did not have a job outside the home, but the 3 older boys were employed. Eventually Belle graduated from high school. A 5 year old boy named Robert Love (born in Ohio about 1875) was living in the home, but Belle's mother only claimed to have had 4 children so it is not clear how Robert was actually related to the Love family. Belle's father had died 5 years before the boy was born. In 1898 Robert's body was found floating in the Kentucky River. He had gone on a Sunday excursion. It was believed he intended to return home the same day. The day before he left he withdrew his savings of $500 from the bank and gave it to his widowed mother. On his Find-A-Grave memorial he is referred to as the son of Hamilton and Ellen Love.

On 5/23/1889 Belle married Charles Vivian Herbert in Hamilton County, Ohio. The name Vivian was his mother's maiden name. He was born in Ohio in 1864. Belle and Charles had two children, Frank Love Herbert (in 1891) and Charles Edward (about 1895).

In the 1900 census, Belle and Charles were listed in Denver, Arapahoe County, Colorado where Charles was a mail carrier. It was reported Belle had had two children and both were alive at the time, but neither of her sons were living in the home at that time. They were living in Hamilton County, Ohio with their grandmother Ellen and Uncle Frank.

The Herbert family moved to Oregon. Belle's husband died in 1903 and she was appointed administrator of his estate valued at $1000. During the 1910 census Belle was listed as a widow living in Portland, Oregon with both of her teenage sons. She was a stenographer with a newspaper. Her sons served during WWI. Charles was in Germany and France.

In the 1920 census, Belle and her sons were living together in Portland. Belle's mother, 85 year old Ellen Love, had joined them. Belle was not working outside the home. Frank was a mechanic and Charles, Jr. was a price clerk at a department store. It is believed Belle's mother died in the 1920s.

The census of 1930 listed Belle and her sons in Portland where Belle was a stenographer for a real estate company. Frank and Charles were living with her and both working as salesmen. Charles' wife, Emma (Werling) Herbert, was also living with them. They had gotten married in 1924. Neither of Belle’s sons ever had children.

During the 1940 census Belle was living in Portland with Charles and Emma. Belle was not working and Charles was a hardware salesman. In 1940 her son Frank was living at the veteran's hospital in Roseburg, Oregon. He was 48 and single. Her son Charles was living in Portland in 1942.

On 8/13/1951, Bell was admitted to the Oregon State Hospital, a residential facility in Salem, Oregon for the treatment of people with mental illness. After living there for 8 years Belle died on 8/6/1959. The cause of death was said to be "senility." She was reported to be 92 years old. She was survived by her son Frank. He died in 1969 and is buried at the Roseburg National Cemetery. Her daughter-in-law, Emma, was living in Portland in 1970.

Her brother Francis died in 1910 in Cincinnati, Ohio. Brother Samuel was living in Cincinnati in 1940.
