Civil War Union Army Officer. A native of Maine, Loring came to California sometime after 1850. With the outbreak of the Civil War, he mustered into the 2nd California Cavalry at the rank of 1st Sergeant in Company B and would serve with his company as part of the California Column. A year later, in 1862, Loring was promoted to the rank of 1st Lieutenant. In 1865, Loring was promoted to the rank of Captain and reassigned to Company A of the 2nd California where he served until the end of the war. After the war, he became an engineer with the carpet cleaning firm of Spaulding & Co in San Francisco. He died as a result of injuries received when his clothing became caught while trying to oil a piece of machinery.
