James was born to James Lorimer Sr. and Jane Wallace in Newcastle England in 1840, although his parents were from Lochmaben, Scotland. His parents brought James and his little brother and 2 sisters to Dunmore, Pennsylvania, emigrating on the ship Leviathan in 1853. Twelve year old James carried with him a letter from his employer in England attesting to his good character and industriousness. He had served as a messenger boy in a shoe store in Newcastle for 9 months.
During the first few years in this country, James lost his younger brother and his mother, and in 1860 at age 20, James died himself, followed by his father later that same year.
