Mary E. Dias died peacefully at home on March 25, 2007, surrounded by her loving family. A lifetime Chico resident of 97 years, Mary was born August 14, 1909.
A vigil will take place at 7 p.m. Thursday, March 29th at Brusie Funeral Home. A funeral mass will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, March 30th at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church.
She was born Mary Eleanor Lopes to Antonio and Filomena Lopes and sadly lost her mother at the age of one; at which time she went to live with her aunt and uncle, Rosa and Manuel Brazil. She attended Chico schools and in 1927 married Manuel R. Dias, together they bought an almond orchard on West 11th Avenue. It was there that she resided for over 79 years. Manuel predeceased her in 1976.
Mary and Manuel had three children, Cecelia, James and Geraldine. They worked together on the family farm and shared much joy spending time as a family. Mary loved to entertain and her friends and family were always treated to many special times around Mary's diner table.
Mary's hobbies included gardening, crocheting, traveling and spending time with her grandchildren. Everyone knew her as "Nana."
She was baptized at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church and was a lifetime member with three more generations following her to be the first family with four generations baptized at the parish. She also was a member of Notre Dame School's Endowment Blue Ribbon Committee, Catholic Daughters of the Americas, Eagles Auxiliary, U.P.P.E.C., Chico Portuguese Club, U.P.E.C., Luso American Fraternal Federation and S.P.R.S.I.
Mary is survived by her loving children, Cecelia and John Chaidez, James and Nancy Dias, Geraldine and Joe Carlos; Her adoring grandchildren, Julie and Michael Boss, David Chaidez, Steven and Susie Carlos, Michael and Gina Dias, Robert and Summerle Carlos and Linda and Matt Keeling; Her dear great-grandchildren, Christina Boss, Mary Boss, Luke Mobilio, Elizabeth Carlos, Joey Carlos, Sienna Dias and Brock Keeling.
She was predeceased by her siblings Philmore Lopes, Ruby Azevedo and Alda Ash.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Notre Dame School Endowment or the Butte Home Health and Hospice in care of the Brusie Funeral Home. Published in Chico Enterprise-Record on March 28, 2007.
