Donald H. Loper Sr., 76, of 480 Maple City Drive, passed away peacefully Saturday (April 26, 2008) at St. James Mercy Hospital. Born in Wellsville, Aug. 30, 1931, he was the son of Orville and Flora Lampman Loper.

As a young man, Don worked summers for the former Erie Railroad Maintenance Department. He was a union carpenter for more than 40 years and was field coordinator the Lee Edmond Construction Company, building Ridge Homes in a 200 mile radius. He served as superintendent of Building and Grounds at the Alfred-Almond Central School, where he had attended school. He was the foreman of Circulation at The Evening Tribune before serving as coordinator for HUD in five towns. He then became coordinator of Building and Grounds and Maintenance for the ARC in Wellsville.

Don served as Justice in Hartsville from 1977-1985, the Town of Canisteo from 1988-1991, and the Village of Canisteo from 1980-1998. He was the first Justice elected outside of the Village of Canisteo, the first Justice in Steuben County to have a decision upheld before the New York State Court of Appeals (People of the State of New York vs Charles Wing). He started Memorial Services for deceased Judges for the Steuben County Magistrates Association. He also narrated the Victim Impact Panel for Steuben County D.W.I. Programs (Bath), narrated Moment of Choice for MADD at area schools and BOCES. Don also organized mock DWI trials for magistrates involving area attorneys.

He was a past member of the N.Y.S. Magistrates Association, and the National Magistrates Association, President of the Steuben County Magistrates Association, Southern Tier and Canisteo Senior Citizens, the Canisteo Grange No. 460, a member of the First United Methodist Church of Canisteo, Hartsville Historical Society, Volunteer of N.C.B.L. Hornell Dodgers, N.Y.S. National Guard and Carpenter's Local No. 66 and worked on the new four lane highway from Angelica to Horseheads.

Don was an avid sports enthusiast and lifetime New York Yankee fan. He played semi-pro baseball as a catcher for the PONY league, Genesee Valley League, town teams of Cohocton and Wellsville. He played softball for the New York Army National Guard Unit in Hornell and coached minor league baseball (Babe Ruth) in Canisteo. During his baseball playing days, he was invited to try out for the Chicago White Sox in Florida, but due to family responsibilities, was unable to accept. He was an avid hunter, trapper, and enjoyed snowmobiling, stock car racing, coon hunting, golfing, horse pulling, farming, camping and country music. Don most enjoyed the times he camped with his family and friends, especially cooking breakfast for all, Don and Beverlee traveled in their motor home for two years throughout the USA and Canada and enjoyed a Caribbean Cruise for their 50th Wedding Anniversary.

He was predeceased by his parents, two brothers, Deforest and Harold Loper, as well as his son, Donald H. Loper Jr. on Oct. 27, 1996.

He is survived by his wife, Beverlee Hargraves Loper, whom he married in Sonyea on Nov. 10, 1950; his son, Curtis (Dawnne) Loper of Wellsville; his brother, Carl Loper of Maine; his daughter-in-law, Nancy Loper; grandchildren, Curtis Jr., Lindsay, Jennifer, Kristi and Darcie; step-grandchildren, Joshua Brott, Rhonda Brott-Willsey and Michael Brott; eight great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.
