LOVING MOTHER, GRANDMOTHER AND FRIEND
ROCKTON - Helen P. Long, 94, of Rockton passed away peacefully Thursday, June 7, 2012. Born March 24, 1918, in Rockford, daughter of Ora and Minnie (Kiltz) Sharp. Graduated from Harlem High School, Class of 1935. Veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army, achieving the rank of Lieutenant. She was very patriotic and proud of her military service. Married Fred M. Long in 1945. Employed by Illinois Bell for 26 years, retiring in 1980. Member of Rockton American Legion Walter Graham Post 332, Rifle Squad, Auxiliary of the Legion, Woman of the Moose since 1953 and Telephone Pioneers of America. Former member of AMVET. Helen loved family get-togethers and had many interests including world travel, dancing and in earlier years, she loved riding her Harley. Her compassion, zest for life and sense of humor will be greatly missed by her family and friends. She was an inspiration to all. Survivors include daughter, Betty (Robert) VanBriesen of Rockton; grandchildren, Lisa (Michael) Blake, Kelly Oltmanns, Timothy White and Kevin (Andrea) VanBriesen; six great-grandchildren; one niece; and two nephews. Predeceased by sisters, Esther Slack and Lilian Githens. Helen's family would like to thank the staff of Wesley Willows and VNA Hospice for their tender loving care.
Service at 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 12, in Delehanty Funeral Home Ltd., 401 River Lane, Loves Park, with visitation from 10 a.m. to service time. Burial in Rockton Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials to Wesley Willows, c/o Employee Christmas Fund.
