|Birth: ||Jun. 19, 1822|
|Death: ||Nov. 15, 1849|
Mary was almost 14 years of age when her father, Richard Long, Sr., moved the family to Winnebago Co. Less than five years later she married Joseph Jewell. One year after the birth of their second child in 1848, she died of "fever" at age 27. Her husband then married her sister, Sarah B. in 1850.
A veteran's grave investigator found her tombstone in Oct of 1935 with the inscription, Mary Long, wife of Joseph Jewell, Mar 15, 1849. Later research proved her month of death as Nov instead of Mar.
In 1986, Mary's tombstone and seven (7) others were removed from the cemetery and put on display at Midway Village in Rockford. Township officials later regained possession of the markers and they currently (2011) reside in a township garage.
Inexplicably, there are two tombstones for Mary. One is of a design common to the 1800s and the other a more modern type. Could the orginal have become buried and thought lost and therefore a substitute made? Both photos were taken in the township garage after they were reclaimed.
