United States Navy Admiral. He attended Paseo High School and Kansas City Junior College in Kansas City, Missouri before graduating from the United States Military Academy at Annapolis, Maryland in 1943. After graduation he was assigned to the battleship "USS Colorado" and served with distinction in the Pacific Theater, earning the Bronze Star with Combat "V" for actions against the Japanese. After the war he embarked upon a career in the Submarine service, where he ultimately commanded the "USS Patrick Henry", "USS Casimir Pulaski", Service Group Three, and Submarine Force Atlantic. He was responsible for the development of many of the systems used by the United States Navy. He also commanded the Submarine Force, Western Atlantic area, as well as being the executive assistant and naval aide to the under secretary of the Navy and deputy chief of naval operations and vice chief of operations. His last command was Pacific commander of all American military forces in the Pacific from 1979 to 1983. He retired in 1983, and shortly after was assigned as part of a commission to investigate the Beirut, Lebanon bombing that killed 241 United States Marines. He later served as President of the Naval Academy Alumni Association from 1991 to 1994. (bio by: Saratoga)
