PORT ARTHUR - Joseph Meyer Loewenstein, M.D., age 96, passed away on Wednesday, February 7, in Midland, Texas, after a brief illness.
Dr. Loewenstein was born in Houston on May 15, 1910, to Edward B. and Lena Kapner Loewenstein.
He was a graduate of San Jacinto High School in Houston and Rice University, where he was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa during his junior year.
He earned his M.D. degree in 1935 from the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston. After a year of internship at John Sealy Hospital in Galveston, he began the practice of medicine in Lovelady, Texas, as an old-fashioned country doctor, riding horseback to remote farmhouses to deliver babies by the light of oil lanterns.
On June 6, 1933, while still a medical student, he married Ethel Fallis, also of Houston. In 1938, when their first child was ten months old, they moved to Port Arthur, where Dr. Loewenstein practiced medicine for more than 40 years.
He was also active in the community, serving as President of the Port Arthur Rotary Club and as President of Port Arthur Little Theatre.
After his wife Ethel died in 1996, Dr. Loewenstein lived in their home in Groves until 2003, when he moved to Midland to be near his son.
Until his final illness he remained mentally alert, spending hours each day at his computer.
Dr. Loewenstein is survived by his son Joseph E. Loewenstein, M.D., and daughter-in-law Bitsy of Midland, Texas; by his son Robert F. Loewenstein, Ph.D. and daughter-in-law Suzanne Bucher of Williams Bay, Wisconsin; and by grandchildren Sarah F. Loewenstein and her husband Marc De Wachter of Atlanta, GA, and Edward B. Loewenstein of Austin, Texas.
A visitation will be held on Sunday, February 11, 2007 from 7 p.m. until 9 p.m. at Grammier-Oberle Funeral Home. Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. Monday at the funeral home, with burial to follow at Greenlawn Memorial Park.
Memorial gifts should be sent to the Port Arthur Little Theatre or to the charity of the donor's choice.
