Elizabeth Anne Church BUCKS COUNTY - Lifelong Bucks County resident Betty Church, age 97 years, 3 months, 9 days, peacefully entered into eternal rest as she slept in the early morning hours Sunday. Betty was born in Morrisville, PA, on Friday Jan. 7, 1910 to parents Elmer Fleetwood Lodge and Mabel Elizabeth (Halderman) Lodge. She and her family moved to the Malone Farm (now the site of the David Library of the American Revolution) when she was a small child, during which time her father was employed as a chauffer for lumberman E.B. Malone of Philadelphia and Washington Crossing, PA. When she was a young girl Betty lived with her family on her grandfather Austin Halderman's farm in Washington Crossing, now known as the Washington Crossing Inn. In her youth she attended a one-room school and enjoyed life at "The Crossing"; socializing with her neighbors, tending to her pets, swimming in the canal, sledding in the winter, or walking across the river bridge to Washington Crossing to attend dances there. She studied piano for several years at the Trenton Conservatory of Music in Trenton. In 1927 she married William (Bill) Howard Church of Langhorne, PA at a ceremony in Yardley, PA. They began their life together residing on Howard and Jeanette Church's farm on Langhorne-Yardley Road (now known as Community Park) where they started their family and established a small dairy herd. They farmed and raised their children, moving several times within the local area, and working diligently through the hardships of The Great Depression and World War II. In the ensuing years they built two Sears Roebuck homes on Langhorne-Yardley Road and settled there as next-door-neighbors to their son and his family. Betty enjoyed tending her flower gardens and houseplants, cooking, and phoning her neighbors. After their retirement from farming Bill worked as a groundskeeper for George School in Newtown, PA while Betty became a nanny and housekeeper to the Windle family in Yardley, PA. In their small travel trailer they enjoyed weekend camping trips, accompanied by their cats. Betty was widowed in 1975 when Bill passed away unexpectedly on Christmas Eve day. Despite her loss she kept working and was able to stay in her own home for many years until frailty required her and her pets to move to the home of her son-in-law and daughter, Duane and Dorothy Doan. When Dorothy became ill Betty entered D'Youville Manor in Yardley, PA. During her years there she became a great-great-grandmother. In March she had moved to ManorCare Yardley. Betty was preceded in death by her husband William Howard Church, by both her children, William Elmer Church and Dorothy May Doan, a brother, Harold Lodge, and an infant grandson. She is survived by a brother and sister-in-law, Elmer and Lillian Lodge of Washington Crossing, PA; a daughter-in-law, Eleanor Church of Langhorne; a son-in-law, Duane Doan Jr. of Yardley; five grandchildren, Ken (and Anita) Church of Barto, (John and) Nancy Current of Feasterville, Doris Doan of Milford, David (and Nora) Doan of Levittown, Donna Doan of Langhorne; six great-grandchildren, Michael Current and Steven Current of Feasterville, (Josiah and) Barbara Nicely of Beaufort, SC, Scott Church of Barto, Sara Jo Miller and Blaine Miller of Milford; a great-great-grandson, Kieran Nicely of Beaufort, SC; two nieces, Judi (and L.G.) Huitt of Tulsa, OK and Joan (and George) Bastian; a nephew, Harold Lodge of Bedford, TX; and Tigger her beloved cat. Relatives and friends are invited to Betty's Life Celebration 10:30-11:30 a.m. Saturday and to her funeral service at 11:30 a.m. at the Swartz/Givnish Funeral Home, Washington and Lincoln Avenues, Newtown, PA 215-968-3891. Interment will follow in Newtown Cemetery, Newtown, PA. Memorial contributions may be made to Save The Cats, P.O. Box 251, Yardley, PA 19067
