Michael Lodge was a native of Ireland who had come ashore in California from a whaling ship. A naturalized Mexican citizen and resident at Villa Branciforte, Lodge knew that marriage into a Spanish-speaking Californio family was a way to gain property. He and Martina Castro wed in 1831.

Michael Lodge worked as a freighter between Stockton and the Mother Lode country during the California Gold Rush. He was killed in 1849.
