Shawn and Shannon Loar, 12 and 11 year old sons of Marvin and Janice Loar, former residents of Osmond died Saturday, June 27, in a traffic accident south of Flagstaff, Arizonia, on divided Interstate U.S. 17. The accident occurred about 5:20 p.m. Saturday when Loar's southbound station wagon collided head on with a pickup truck that was traveling the wrong way, according to the Department of Public Safety.
Marvin Loar was listed in critical condition at Marcus Lawrence Hospital at Cottonwood, Arizona, following surgery for multiple head and chest injuries. Also killed in the accident were a scoutmaster and a boy scout. Injured were two scouts and an assistant scoutmaster.
Loar had traveled to the Grand Canyon to pick up a group of boy scouts who had been hiking in the canyon and was on his way home when the accident occurred.
The driver of the pickup has been charged on four counts of manslaughter and one count of reckless endangerment.
Funeral services for the two Loar boys where held Thursday, July 2, at the Kimball Stake Center in Mesa, Arizona. The two boys are survieved by their parents Janice and Marvin Loar of Mesa and brothers, Sheldon, Sherwin, Shane, and Shaylen and sister, Sherry Ann.
The Loars were former residents of Osmond when Marvin taught at the LDS Seminary in Afton.
