Jean Little Couzens died May 15, 2013 at the home of her daughter, in Clarksburg. She was 103. Born October 5, 1909, on Oahu in the Territory of the Hawaiian Islands, she attended Punahou School , Class of 1927. She graduated from the University of Washington in 1931 with a B.S. in Library Science.
She married John Couzens, a young San Francisco lawyer, in 1939. They were married nearly 60 years until John's death in 1999. Their son was born in 1944. They moved to Auburn in 1945, where their daughter was born in 1947.
Jean's life was public service. She served PTA, Children's Home Society, Community Concert Association, Auburn-Faith Community Hospital Guild, A.A.U.W., Auburn-Faith Hospice, and the Committee to Preserve the Courthouse for the Courts. She was founding editor of WestArt, California's first publication dedicated to contemporary art. Editor for 17 years, she is acknowledged in Art/Women/California: Parallels and Intersections 1950-2000. In 1987 Jean received the McCann Award for her service to Auburn and Placer County youth and civic programs. In 1988 she was named one of the 100 people who most influenced Auburn's first 100 years.
She served on the Board of the Auburn Public Library, and the Auburn-Placer County Library Advisory Board. She founded Friends of the Library and the children's summer reading program. Her column, "Samplings From the Bookshelf," was a regular feature of the Auburn Journal, the Auburn Sentinel, and Sierra Heritage. In 1990 Jean received the California Association of Library Trustees and Commissioner's Award for Outstanding Service to Libraries.
